What is coal?
Coal is the worlds most plentiful fossil fuel. It is a combustible, sedimentary, organic rock, which is composed mainly of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. It is a mineral formed from the remains of land-based plants buried hundreds of millions of years ago and subjected to tremendous heat and pressure.
What are the four major types of coal?
Coal is usually classified into four categories, or ranks, based on how it responded to increasing heat and pressure over long periods of time and how much carbon it contains: Lignite (soft), Subbituminous (medium-soft), Bituminous (medium-hard) and Anthracite (hard).
Different types of coal have different application. Lignite contains a lot of moisture and ash and breaks apart easily. This kind of coal, also called brown coal, is used mainly at electricity-generating plants. Subbituminous is a kind of dull black coal is generally used to produce steam for electricity generation. Bituminous used to generate electricity and to produce coke, a coal residue used in the steel industry. Anthracite is at the top of the rank scale and has a correspondingly higher carbon and energy content and a lower level of moisture. Anthracite makes a good heating fuel for homes.

The main use of coal is to generate electricity. Another major use of coal is in iron and steel-making. The iron industry uses coke ovens to melt iron ore. Coke, an almost pure carbon residue of coal, is used as a fuel in smelting metals. Coal is also used by other industries. The chemicals, paper, brick, limestone, metal products and cement industries all use coal to make products.
